Grow Your Own Teacher with the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship

The Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is a practical, cost-effective way for schools to develop new teachers from within their existing staff or from a carefully selected pool of candidates.

Apprentices work in your school while they train, earning a salary and contributing to your community from day one. On completion, they achieve QTS.

Why Choose the Apprenticeship Route

Develop Talent from Within – Train passionate staff already familiar with your school’s ethos and pupils.

Boost Teaching Capacity – Apprentices support your classrooms from day one.

Make the Most of Government Funding – Use the Apprenticeship Levy to grow your own teachers cost-effectively.

Partner with Experts – We provide training, mentoring and support so your apprentice succeeds.

Suitable Candidates

The apprenticeship is ideal for:

1. Existing School Staff – teaching assistants or unqualified teachers ready to train.

2. Pre-Screened Future Teachers – recruit from our pool of approved candidates.

Finance & HR Requirements

Schools must:

  • Employ the apprentice full-time as an unqualified teacher
  • Pay at least point 1 on the unqualified teacher pay scale

Training Costs:

  • Levy-paying schools: No cost – Essex & Thames draws the £9,000 fee from the Apprenticeship Levy
  • Non-levy schools: 95% funded – £450 co-investment from the school
